Finding the Perfect Neighborhood in Baltimore County
The neighborhood in Baltimore County that you choose to live in can have a big impact on your lifestyle.
Follow these steps to find the perfect community and your ideal Baltimore County neighborhood to call home:
Is it close to your favorite spots?
What activities do you engage in regularly? Make a list of places you visit most frequently, including work, schools, church, the gym, etc. Use google maps to see how far you would have to travel from each neighborhood to do most of these activities.
Check out the school district.
If you have kids or are planning on having kids, then this is an important one. And even if you don’t, this can affect potential resale value.
Find out if the neighborhood is safe.
Ask the local police department to inform you on neighborhood crime statistics. Consider the number of crimes, but also the type of crime. Is crime on the rise, or are rates decreasing? Does crime occur only in one part of the neighborhood, like near a retail area? All of these things can help you determine if you feel safe in a neighborhood.
Determine if the neighborhood is economically stable.
Check in with your local economic development office. See if income and property values are stable or rising, and learn about any proposed development plans in the area. What’s the percentage of homes to apartments? Do you see vacant businesses, or homes that have been on the market for months?
See if you'll make money.
Ask your real estate agent to inform you about price appreciation in the neighborhood. Past performance is not necessarily an indication of future results, but it could be helpful in determining what type of investment your home will be.
Make personal observations.
Take the time to go for a walk around the neighborhood. Are the homes well maintained? How does it feel? Pick a warm day, and see if any neighbors are out and about—you can ask them questions about the area and what they like or dislike about living there.
